Your Teen Daughter Wants a Skincare Routine: A Mum's Guide

The simplest way to start your teen daughter on skincare is three products, not ten: a gentle cleanser, a lightweight hydrating layer, and daily SPF. That's genuinely enough for most teenage skin, and it sets up good habits without tipping into the ten-step, actives-heavy routines she might see online.

General information, not medical advice — always check with your GP, midwife or pharmacist about your own skin and any product you're unsure of.

Why Simple Beats Trendy

Teenage skin is still establishing its barrier, and it's often more reactive to strong actives than adult skin. The trend-driven routines flooding social media — packed with acids, retinoids and a dozen steps — are usually built for skin that's finished changing, not skin that's still working out what it needs. A simple, gentle routine actually does more for a teen's skin (and confidence) than a complicated one, and it's a much easier habit to stick to before exams and sport get in the way.

The Starter Routine I'd Actually Gift Her

If I were building a first routine for Alina in a few years, it would look like this: a mild, non-stripping cleanser; a soothing toner or essence to calm and hydrate; a lightweight moisturiser; and SPF every single morning, no exceptions. Centella (cica) and heartleaf are two of the gentlest K-beauty ingredients going — they're formulated to help calm and soothe reactive skin, which makes them a good fit for a first routine. If you want the full logic behind Korean layering, our beginner's guide to skincare is a good one to read together.

What to Leave Out for Now

Hold off on retinal, high-strength exfoliating acids and multi-step "glass skin" routines until skin is a bit older and any breakout concerns have been properly assessed. If breakouts are a real worry, that's a conversation for a GP or dermatologist rather than a skincare routine — this article is about the everyday habit, not treating anything. A gentle double cleanse (see our double cleansing 101 guide) is genuinely one of the best habits to teach early, and it's low-risk for any skin type.

Questions Mums Ask

What age should a teen start skincare?

There's no strict age — once she's curious and wants to look after her skin, a simple cleanse-hydrate-SPF routine is appropriate at any teen age.

Should I let her use my products?

Only the gentle ones. Anything with actives like retinal or strong acids is better left for later, or introduced slowly and separately.

Is this a good gift idea?

Yes — a small, gentle starter set (rather than a huge haul) tends to be the most useful and least overwhelming gift for a first routine.

Where to Start

For a genuinely gentle first set, I'd start her on The Barrier Repair Set ($188) — it's soothing, low-actives, and a lovely one to gift. If she's after something a little more "glow" focused once her skin has settled into a routine, The 5-Step Glass-Skin Routine ($165) is the next step up.
