The 3-Month Wall: Postpartum Hair Shedding and Dull Skin, Explained

Glow-restoring skincare in golden morning light — the postpartum three-month wall

Somewhere around the three-month mark, two things tend to happen in the same fortnight: your hairbrush starts filling up alarmingly, and your face goes flat — dull, tired-looking, like the light switched off. Mums call it hitting the wall. Here is the reassuring truth: the shedding and the dullness are the same event, arriving on schedule, and both are temporary.

General information, not medical advice. Extreme shedding or hair loss in patches is worth a GP visit to check iron, thyroid and the usual suspects.

Why month three, and why both at once

During pregnancy, high oestrogen held your hair in its growth phase — that is why pregnancy hair was so thick — and drove the extra blood flow and oil that made the famous glow. After birth, oestrogen drops, and around 8 to 14 weeks later the held-over hair releases all at once (the medical name is telogen effluvium). The same hormone drop is what dials down the glow: less blood flow at the surface, slower cell turnover, drier skin that reflects light poorly. One hormone shift, two visible symptoms, both peaking around month three to five. The skin side of this story is told in full in the honest fix for post-baby dull skin.

The wall is real — and it is a phase, not a verdict.

The hair: mostly patience

Honest version: postpartum shedding largely resolves itself by months nine to twelve as the cycle re-balances. Gentle handling, no crash diets, and checking iron levels if you feel run down — that is the real playbook. The regrowth fringe of baby hairs around month six is the visible proof it is working.

The skin: this one you can actually move

Dullness responds fast to the right routine because it is mostly a hydration-and-surface story. Layered watery hydration (toner, then serum) brings back the light-reflection that reads as glow; niacinamide evens the flat, grey look; and an overnight collagen mask delivers the quickest visible win in skincare — plumper, brighter skin by morning. The full method lives in our glass skin for busy mums guide, and none of it needs more than the four minutes you actually have.

You cannot rush the hair. You can absolutely help the glow.

Questions mums ask

How long does the shedding last? Typically it tapers by month six and normalises by the first birthday. If it continues heavily past that, see your GP.

Is the dullness permanent? No — it is hydration, turnover and sleep debt, all of which respond to routine and time. Most mums see the flatness lift within two to four weeks of consistent hydration layering.

Do I need supplements? Only what your GP recommends after bloods. Skincare cannot fix an iron deficiency, and supplements cannot fix a stripped skin barrier — each tool to its job.

The ready-made route
