If you have shopped K-beauty in the last couple of years, one word keeps coming up: heartleaf. It is the hero of the internet's most-talked-about toner and it turns up on ingredient lists everywhere. Here is what it actually is, and why it suits post-baby skin so well.
What it is
Heartleaf is the common name for Houttuynia cordata, a herb long used in traditional medicine and now beloved in Korean skincare for one reason: it is one of the gentlest, most calming botanicals there is. It helps settle the look of redness and reactivity without any of the sting that stronger soothing ingredients can bring. Where an acid corrects and a retinoid renovates, heartleaf simply calms, and sometimes calm is exactly what skin needs most.

Why it calms, in plain English
Heartleaf is rich in naturally soothing compounds that help quiet the skin's inflammatory response, the process behind flushing, sensitivity and angry-looking breakouts. Because it works by calming rather than exfoliating or resurfacing, it does not thin or sensitise the skin the way stronger actives can. That is what makes it safe to use twice a day, even on skin that has become touchy.
Why it suits mum skin
Pregnancy and the postpartum months often leave skin more reactive than it used to be: flushing easily, stinging at products it once tolerated, generally touchy. Heartleaf is made for exactly that skin. It calms without stripping, hydrates lightly, and preps the skin so whatever you use next absorbs instead of sitting on top. It is the step that makes a whole routine feel gentler, and often the first thing I reach for when someone tells me their skin has started arguing with everything.
Our most popular version is the Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner, 77% heartleaf water, patted onto damp skin morning and night. It is one of the most popular Korean skincare products to ever land in Australia, and it is pregnancy and breastfeeding friendly, which is why it anchors so many of our routines.

How to use it
- After cleansing, pat a few drops over damp skin with your hands until it sinks in.
- Follow with your serum and moisturiser.
- Gentle enough for twice daily, even on reactive skin.
Questions mums ask
Is a heartleaf toner an exfoliating toner? No, and that is the point. It is a soothing, hydrating toner, not an astringent or acid toner, so it will not sting or over-strip.
Can very sensitive or rosacea-prone skin use it? It is one of the gentlest options out there, though if you have a diagnosed condition, check with your derm first.
Is it safe in pregnancy? Widely considered pregnancy and breastfeeding friendly. As always, your practitioner has the final say.
Want it in a calming routine?
Heartleaf runs right through the Barrier Repair Set, our calm-rebuild-seal routine for reactive skin, and the wider Pregnancy-Safe collection. If your skin has been through it lately, and post-baby skin usually has, heartleaf is a lovely place to make peace.
