The Dark-Spot Brightening Set
The mask of pregnancy is real — and it fades slowly, gently.
Nobody warned me about the patches. After I had Alina, I noticed this cloudy shadow across my cheeks and above my lip that hadn't been there before — the “mask of pregnancy,” melasma, the thing hormones and sunshine gift you and then leave behind. And the old marks from breakouts that used to fade in a week suddenly seemed to stay for months.
I tried the harsh stuff first — the vitamin C that stung, the acids that left me red and flaking, the “brightening” products that just irritated skin already stretched thin by no sleep. None of it was gentle enough for the version of me that had four minutes to herself between the shower and the baby waking up.
So I built this set instead. Three K-beauty steps that work with tired, hormonal skin, not against it: a calming toner to prep, a niacinamide + tranexamic-acid serum to genuinely fade dark spots and even things out, and a barrier cream to seal it all in. No hydroquinone, no stinging acids — just steady, patient brightening you can actually keep up.
Why these three work together
Fading pigmentation isn't about one hero product — it's about giving the active step the calmest, best-supported skin to work on. That's the whole logic of this routine: prep and calm, then correct, then protect the result. Each step exists so the next one can do its job better.
Step 1 — Prep & calm (Heartleaf 77% Toner). Heartleaf (Houttuynia cordata) is the gentlest way to settle skin before an active. It sweeps away leftover cleanser and hard-water residue, tops up light hydration, and quiets the low-grade redness that hormonal, sleep-deprived skin runs on. Calmer skin tolerates the serum far better — which is exactly why the brightening step doesn't sting the way vitamin C or acids can.
Step 2 — Correct (Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% Serum). This is the engine of the set, and it's a best-seller for a reason. It pairs two proven tone-evening actives that attack discolouration from two angles: tranexamic acid interrupts the pigment pathway that melasma and hormonal dark spots run on, while 10% niacinamide slows pigment from surfacing and visibly evens the overall tone. Together they fade dark spots, post-acne marks and that pregnancy “mask” — without hydroquinone and without the sting. Prepping with the toner first means every drop lands on receptive, hydrated skin.
Step 3 — Protect the result (Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream). Actives only keep working if the barrier stays intact. This cushioning cream locks the serum in, replaces the water and lipids tired skin loses, and keeps the barrier strong so you can use the serum consistently — which is the single biggest factor in whether pigmentation actually fades. Seal it in, protect it, and the correcting step compounds night after night.
Give this set an honest 60 days. If your skin doesn't feel calmer, more even and better looked-after — or a product just doesn't suit you — I'll refund it or swap it for something that fits. No sending it back, no fine print.

What each step does
77% heartleaf extract soothes redness and reactivity while adding a first, light layer of hydration. It preps skin so the serum absorbs evenly and without irritation. Use it as your first leave-on step, morning and night.
The active step. 4% tranexamic acid targets the pigment pathway behind melasma and hormonal spots; 10% niacinamide evens overall tone and reduces the look of dark marks and post-acne discolouration. Gentle enough for daily use, unlike many vitamin C or acid brighteners.
A cushioning moisturiser that seals in the serum, restores lost moisture and lipids, and keeps the skin barrier strong so you can keep the routine going without irritation. The final step, AM and PM.
How to use it
After cleansing, morning and night, layer thinnest to richest:
Pat a few drops of the Heartleaf toner over clean skin with your hands. AM + PM.
Smooth a few drops of the Niacinamide + TXA serum over the whole face, focusing on dark spots. AM + PM.
Seal everything in with the 345 Relief Cream. AM + PM.
One non-negotiable: wear sunscreen every morning. UV is what darkens spots and undoes brightening — daily SPF is what protects the progress this set makes.
What to expect
Fading pigmentation is a patience game — it happens, but it's gradual. Here's an honest timeline:
Two things decide your results more than anything else: using it consistently (every day, both actives working night after night) and wearing SPF daily. Skip the sunscreen and pigment simply darkens back up — so treat SPF as part of the routine, not optional.
Best for your skin type
This set suits all skin types — it's built around gentle brightening, so it works where harsher vitamin C or AHA routines can't. Anyone with dark spots, post-acne marks, melasma or uneven tone is the core fit.
Ideal. The niacinamide + TXA serum won't dry you out the way vitamin C or acids can, and the 345 Relief Cream restores the moisture and lipids dry skin lacks.
A great fit. Niacinamide helps balance oil in the T-zone while the toner and cream keep drier areas comfortable. Layer the cream lighter where you're oilier.
Works well. Niacinamide is a favourite for oil-prone skin, the textures are lightweight, and the cream is cushioning without feeling heavy. Apply the cream in a thin layer.
This is where the set shines. Heartleaf calms, niacinamide and tranexamic acid are far gentler than acids or high-strength vitamin C, and there's no hydroquinone. Patch test first and ease in if you're very reactive.
This set isn't specifically marketed as pregnancy-safe. Topical tranexamic acid and niacinamide are generally considered low-risk, but everyone's situation is different — please run it past your GP or midwife before starting if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Questions answered
Will this actually fade my melasma?
Melasma is stubborn and hormonally driven, so be patient — but the tranexamic acid + niacinamide combination is one of the gentlest evidence-backed approaches to it. Expect gradual softening over 8–12+ weeks with consistent use, and know that daily SPF is essential or it will darken straight back.
Is it safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Topical tranexamic acid and niacinamide are generally considered low-risk, but this set isn't specifically marketed as pregnancy-safe — please check with your GP or midwife before using it during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Do I really need sunscreen with this?
Yes — every single morning. UV exposure is the main thing that triggers and deepens dark spots. Without daily SPF the serum is fighting an uphill battle; with it, your progress holds. Sunscreen isn't included in this set, so pair it with one you love.
Will it sting or make me flaky like acids did?
That's exactly why this set exists. There are no stinging acids, no high-strength vitamin C and no hydroquinone — just niacinamide and tranexamic acid, buffered by a calming toner and a barrier cream. It's designed to be kind to tired, reactive, postpartum skin.
Can I use it morning and night?
Yes — all three steps are gentle enough for twice-daily use. If your skin is very sensitive, start once a day (at night) for the first week, then build up to AM and PM.
