The melasma moustache. Nobody warns you about it, plenty of mums quietly Google it, and almost no one talks about it out loud: a shadow of darker skin across the upper lip that appears during or after pregnancy and looks, cruelly, like a faint moustache. If that is what brought you here — you are not imagining it, it is extremely common, and it has a name: upper-lip melasma.
General information, not medical advice. Pigmentation is always worth a conversation with your GP or dermatologist.
Why the upper lip, of all places
Melasma shows up where two things overlap: hormone-sensitive pigment cells and sun exposure. The upper lip is a bullseye for both. It catches direct UV on every school run and coffee walk (and almost nobody carries sunscreen down onto it properly). It is also a zone where pigment cells respond strongly to the oestrogen surge of pregnancy — the same reason the classic \"mask\" lands on cheeks and forehead, which we cover in pregnancy pigmentation explained. Waxing or threading the area can add a layer of post-inflammatory darkening on top, which is why the shadow often deepens after a salon visit.

What actually helps
First, stop re-triggering it. SPF 50 every morning, deliberately worked over the upper lip — this zone gets missed constantly. Reapply before the afternoon pickup. If you wax or thread, be gentle afterwards: no acids on freshly waxed skin, and shade or SPF immediately.
Then, fade the look of it gently. The same pairing that works for cheek melasma works here: niacinamide + tranexamic acid, applied as part of your whole-face routine (spot-treating tends to create edges). Because the area is small and close to the mouth, gentle matters even more — this is not the place for strong acids or hydroquinone experiments, a comparison we cover honestly in TXA vs hydroquinone.
The honest timeline
Upper-lip melasma is famously stubborn — the zone re-tans fast. Expect the look of it to soften over 8 to 12 weeks of daily serum plus religious SPF, with the full result building over months. The mums who win this one are not the ones with the strongest product; they are the ones still applying SPF in July.

Questions mums ask
Is it permanent? Usually not — but the longer it is left unprotected in the sun, the more established it becomes. Start the SPF habit today regardless of anything else.
Should I stop waxing my lip? You do not have to — but switch to the gentlest method you tolerate, never wax over irritated skin, and protect the area from sun for a few days after.
Will makeup make it worse? No — and honestly, a mineral SPF-tinted product over the area is a double win: coverage now, protection always.
The ready-made route
The Dark-Spot Brightening Set is the whole gentle method in one box — the toner, the niacinamide + TXA serum, the barrier cream and the weekly collagen mask, used across the full face with extra attention to the lip zone. If you are pregnant right now, start with the Pregnancy-Safe Routine and have the brightening conversation with your GP first. Or browse the pigmentation edit.
