Most face serums need two to four drops — roughly a five-cent-coin sized amount — to cover your whole face and neck. More than that doesn't sink in faster or work harder; it just sits on the surface, pills under moisturiser, or ends up on your pillow.
General information, not medical advice — always check with your GP, midwife or pharmacist about your own skin and any product you're unsure of.
Why we all reach for too much
It's an easy habit to fall into, especially when you're exhausted and just want the routine done. More product feels like more effort, more care, more result. But skin can only absorb so much in one sitting — the rest is just wasted product and a shorter-lasting bottle.
The actual amount, step by step
As a general guide: a watery essence or toner-serum needs enough to pat over damp skin, usually 3–4 drops. A concentrated treatment serum — like a vitamin C or a brightening blend — needs less, around 2–3 drops. Richer, oil-based serums need the least, sometimes just 1–2 drops. Your neck counts as part of your face here, by the way — it shows your age just as fast and gets forgotten just as often.
If you're not sure what order to apply things in once you've got the amount right, I've written the only layering rule you actually need — it's simpler than most routines make it look.
Signs you're using too much
If your serum pills into little balls under moisturiser, or your face feels greasy for twenty minutes after application, you're using more than your skin can take on in one go. It's not wasted love, but it is wasted product — and on a newborn budget, that adds up.
Signs you're using too little
If you're rubbing it in and your skin still looks patchy or dry in spots minutes later, or you're stretching four drops across your whole face plus your partner's, that's too thin a layer to actually do its job. The fix is small — one extra drop, applied properly, patted rather than dragged across skin.
If you're choosing between our two PDRN serums and wondering which suits your skin and your drop-count, I've compared them properly here.
Questions mums ask
Should I use more serum in winter?
You might add one extra drop if your skin genuinely feels tighter, but the fix for winter dryness is usually your moisturiser, not more serum. Serum treats, moisturiser seals.
Does a bigger bottle mean I should use more per application?
No — bottle size is about how long it lasts, not how much your skin needs per use. Use the same small amount regardless of bottle size.
Can I use two serums at once?
Yes, applied thinnest-to-thickest, but keep each one to its own small amount rather than doubling up on both.
Where to start
If dullness is your main frustration, The "I Look So Tired" Glow Reset ($139) is built around serums designed to be used sparingly and still work hard. If pigmentation is the bigger concern, The Dark-Spot Brightening Set ($154) is the better fit. Both are on alinabeauty.com.au.
