Hyaluronic acid goes on before moisturiser, applied to slightly damp skin. It's a humectant, which means it pulls water toward itself — apply it on dry skin with nothing to seal it in afterwards, and it can end up pulling moisture out of your skin rather than adding to it. That's the whole answer, but the "why" is worth understanding so you actually get the benefit.
General information, not medical advice — always check with your GP, midwife or pharmacist about your own skin and any product you're unsure of.
Why the order matters so much
Hyaluronic acid can hold an enormous amount of water relative to its own weight, but it needs a water source to draw from. Applied straight after cleansing, while skin is still a little damp, it pulls that surface moisture in. Moisturiser applied on top then acts as the seal, locking everything in rather than letting it evaporate.
Skip the moisturiser step, or apply hyaluronic acid onto completely dry skin in a dry room (hello, reverse-cycle heating in a Melbourne winter), and it can actually draw moisture from the deeper layers of your skin instead — leaving you feeling tighter and drier than before you started.
The simple order to follow
Cleanse, then toner (still slightly damp), then your hyaluronic acid serum or the PDRN Hyaluronic Capsule serum many of our mums use, then moisturiser to seal it all in. If you're using a mist instead of a liquid serum, the same rule applies — mist onto damp skin, then follow with a proper moisturiser rather than leaving it to evaporate on its own. For the fuller layering order across an entire routine, our guide on what order to apply Korean skincare walks through every step.

Why this matters more for tired, dehydrated mum skin
Sleep deprivation, air conditioning, hormonal shifts and long days indoors under lights all pull moisture out of skin faster than usual. Getting the hyaluronic acid order right is a small thing, but it's one of the few skincare fixes that gives a genuinely visible difference within a day or two, which matters when you don't have a lot of routine-building time to spare. If you want the shortest possible version of a full routine, The 4-Minute Skincare Routine for Mums With No Time is built exactly for this.
Hyaluronic acid is also considered safe during pregnancy, which we cover properly in Is Hyaluronic Acid Safe During Pregnancy? if that's on your mind.

Questions mums ask
Should hyaluronic acid go on wet or dry skin?
Slightly damp is ideal — straight after cleansing or toning, before it's had a chance to fully dry down.
Can I skip moisturiser if I use hyaluronic acid?
No, not really — moisturiser is what seals the hyaluronic acid's moisture in. Skipping it defeats the purpose and can leave skin feeling drier.
Can I layer hyaluronic acid with other actives?
Yes, it plays well with almost everything, including niacinamide, vitamin C and PDRN. It's usually one of the earliest, thinnest layers in a routine.
