Why does everything suddenly sting? A strange thing happens to a lot of women somewhere in the first year after birth: skincare they have used happily for years starts stinging. Moisturiser tingles. Toner burns. Even water feels aggressive some mornings. The first instinct is to think the products changed. They did not. Your skin barrier did, and understanding it is the whole fix.
What your skin barrier actually is
The outermost layer of your skin is a wall of cells mortared together with lipids: ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids. When the wall is intact, water stays in and irritants stay out. When gaps open up, water escapes (hello tightness and flaking) and everything gets in (hello stinging). Hormonal shifts, broken sleep and the general resource drain of growing and feeding a human all thin out that mortar. It is common, it is temporary, and it is very fixable.

The counterintuitive rule: do less
A stinging face makes people buy more products. It needs fewer. Strip the routine to cleanse, calm, seal, and nothing else for two to four weeks:
- Cleanse once a day, gently. The Ma:nyo foam is low-pH and does not strip.
- Calm with a centella or heartleaf layer. The Skin1004 Centella Ampoule is pure, fragrance-free soothing for skin that argues with everything.
- Seal with a ceramide cream. The Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream is literally built on the recipe your barrier is missing: 3 ceramides, 4 peptides, 5 panthenols.
No acids, no retinoids, no fragrance, no new experiments. Boring, done properly, is the entire treatment.

How to tell it is working
Week one: the stinging fades and skin stops feeling tight an hour after moisturising. Week two to four: redness settles, makeup sits better, and the flaky patches close up. After that, you can reintroduce your actives one at a time, a week apart, and your skin will tell you clearly which ones it is ready for.
When it is more than a barrier
If you have raised, weeping or spreading patches, or itching that keeps you up, that is GP territory, not skincare territory. Eczema and dermatitis flare postpartum too, and they deserve real medical care. The routine above sits happily alongside whatever your doctor prescribes.
Questions mums ask
Why did my old products suddenly sting? Your barrier thinned, so the same product now reaches a more vulnerable surface. Rebuild the barrier and most become comfortable again.
How long does it take to repair? Usually two to four weeks of a stripped-back, barrier-focused routine.
Can I speed it up with more product? No, that is the trap. Fewer, gentler products let the barrier rebuild faster.
The reset in one box
The complete reset lives in The Barrier Repair Set: calm, rebuild, protect, with nothing that stings, all pregnancy and breastfeeding safe. Your skin has been through a lot. This is how you call a truce.
